The Art

Carnatic Music

Carnatic music originated South India. It is one of two main sub-genres of Indian classical music that evolved from ancient Hindu Samaveda. The basic elements of śruti (the relative musical pitch), swara (the musical sound of a single note), rāga (the mode or melodic formulæ), and tala (the rhythmic cycles) form the foundation of improvisation and composition in Carnatic music. Although improvisation plays an important role, Carnatic music is mainly sung, taught, and learned through compositions, especially the kriti (or kirtanam).

The Venu

The carnatic flute or Venu is one of the ancient transverse flutes of Indian classical music. It is an aerophone typically made from bamboo, that is a side blown wind instrument.  A venu typically has six holes, is about the thickness of a thumb, and twelve fingers long. It's one of the oldest instruments known to be used in South Indian Classical or Carnatic music.
